My 10 1/2 year old Afghan hound had to have a cancerous anal gland, stage 2-3, removed three weeks ago. It was the size of the vet's fist but fortunately had not invaded any other organs, including her colon. The vet thinks he got all of it. Nothing showed up in her urine or blood tests or Xrays. The only sign I got was a few days before the surgery when she suddenly started licking her anus all the time.
The vet recommended adding Missing Link Recovery and Detox to her food, which I broke into four small feeding per day. I did, along with Puritan's Pride curcumin and a generous sprinkle of ginger--both shown to have cancer-fighting and anti-inflammatory properties. Her hips were causing her lots of problems the first few days. She couldn't seem to straighten them out when she first got up after sleeping for awhile. I found the sight very disturbing. The vet had to cut a major nerve.
Miraculously, her hips seemed to function normally within maybe 5 days. She started speeding ahead of me again and wanting to engage other dogs in play. I hadn't seen these behaviors for a couple of years.
I must add that I immediately asked friends with various spiritual beliefs and practices to pray/meditate/do rituals and send her good energy. I'm sure these helped--and continue to make a difference--too. They've helped me too. She's a great, gentle soul, who, like all Afghans, seems a cross between a dog and a cat, with some horse and monkey thrown in. On at least four occasions, she's saved our toy poodle, who is none too bright but overly bold, from coyotes by lunging at them and barking in her deepest, loudest, most ferocious voice that scares even me. I don't know what he'd do without her (though he'd like to rule her, the cat, and everything else he can.)
