We had to start feeding our male cat moist food after high quality dry kibble almost killed him. Most cats don't drink very much water, which is a bigger problem in males. Basically he started having blood in his urine, then couldn't pee at all. Luckily I found him in my closet, where he had apparently gone to die. $1800 and three days at the vet with IV fluids and a catheter and he was doing better.
We tried good quality canned foods, which he didn't care for. It was expensive and he didn't want it and I hated dealing with it. So I checked out Primal frozen raw food at my local pet store. It actually costs less than most high quality canned foods. A 3 lb. bag has 48 1oz. pieces. My 10 lb. cat eats 2 in the morning and 2 at dinner, so a bag lasts me 12 days. I can't get high quality canned food for $1.50/day. For the first time ever my cat actually begs for food. I have six little plastic containers and I put 2 pieces in each and put those in the refrigerator and keep the rest of the bag in the freezer. Every time containers come out of the dishwasher I refill them with food and put them back in the fridge.
Now the selfish sounding part-the food doesn't smell. But the best part---THE CAT POOP DOESN'T SMELL! At all! Like you can stand right next to the litter box while the cat is pooping and you will not smell anything. That alone justifies buying it.
