I keep mbuna cichlids and if you know anything about them, they are herbivores. Its important to feed them a vegetable based diet with low protein as their digestive system is not designed for concentrated protein. I bought tetra veggie flakes and my fish seemed to like it. The guy at the local pet store however, suggested I buy HBH brand veggie flakes. I bought that too and figured that I would use HBH brand veggie flakes when I ran out of the Tetra.
One day I got curious if there was really any difference in the two so I looked at the ingredients. The first ingredient in tetra veggie flakes is Fish meal, then brown rice, then yeast. This doesnt sound veggie at all. I looked at the Crude Protein level listed on the container and found it was 48%. This is rather high for a veggie flake. The HBH veggie flake had a crude protein level of only 38% and the ingredients contained substantially more plants and vegetables.
This product may be fine for many species of fish but if you keep herbivores like mbuna cichlids that need a low protein diet then there are better options.
