Shortly after being neutered when he became 12 years of age and had had a thorough cardiac evaluation prior to the surgery due to his age, my Best in Show Papillon developed a heart murmur and had a stroke some 5 weeks post surgery. I regret that I ever had the surgery as the loss of testosterone has led to a number of immediate health deteriorations that I have since learned are confirmed side effects of neuter surgery in male dogs.
My veterinarian suggested starting him on a regimen of COQ10, and he has remained a happy boy and will turn 16 years of age in December. As long as he takes his one capsule daily, he has no cough, no signs of difficult breathing or fluid build up, and has kept soft tissue health in his mouth and a pleasant breath as well. His stroke had left his tongue paralyzed, so he has considerable difficulty taking pills or eating--so I open the capsule and mix it with his homemade meal each evening. I am so impressed with how this medication has helped preserve dental health, that I am now starting my younger dogs on it because toy breeds tend to have premature loss teeth and dental disease even with annual cleanings. I cannot say enough about how glad that my vet recommended I use COQ10 because he had had a heart attack and taking it himself and was really impressed with it.
