Just two days ago, I reviewed Hill's Prescription Diet Feline Hypo Cat Treats, 2.5-oz bag. In a rare moment of revelation comparable to Saul's experience on the road to Damascus, I realized that HILL'S Z/D LOW ALLERGEN CAT FOOD (found on the Web), also made of hydrolyzed chicken, would likely be similar to, if not identical to, the treats since both are produced by the same manufacturer.
I dropped by the vet's office, which had this product in the back room in 4-pound bags. After having read the ingredients list, I can testify that both the bulk food and the treats contain pretty much the very same ingredients except that the latter doesn't have added "chicken liver flavor." Indeed, the labeling is even in the same three languages ‒ English, French, and Spanish. So, I purchased a bag for our Amanda (mentioned in the treats review).
To make what should be a short story slightly longer, Amanda wolfed down the pea-sized pellets. She didn't seem to mind, or even notice, that the bulk product wasn't molded into the same irrepressibly cute little heart shapes as the treats version.
Since a four-pound bag provides a supply of the food that dwarfs the 2.5 ounce pouch of treats, Amanda is assured of a more reliable supply in the larder. One can only pray that she doesn't get too finicky; there are only so many options available when providing a hypoallergenic diet.
P.S. 11/20/13 In a postscript that could be entitled "Things that Go Bump in the Night" and serves as dramatic evidence that Amanda really likes this stuff, I must report that we heard strange sounds coming from the kitchen in the Stygian dark before dawn this morning. We discovered that Amanda had knocked the 4lb bag off the counter, bitten the REALLY tough plastic in several places, and then evidently inserted a claw into the punctures to make two long slashes. We managed to rescue the container before she'd gorged herself. The pellets are now transferred to a hard plastic container with a screw top. Lucky for us she doesn't have an opposable thumb.
Bad kitty.
