Initial review Oct 2010: My nearly 13 year old male Australian Shepherd has always had a spot of dry flakey skin along his back near the base of his tail, not uncommon for dogs. His isn't really a "hot spot" however, and doesn't seem to itch. Her never bites or chews at it. The Linatone Plus Skin & Coat Revitalizer is the only product I've found that works fairly well. I've used this product on this dog for a number of years. The product label suggests one teaspoon per 20 lbs of body weight per feeding. To be fairly effective I've had to nearly double that amount; even so a very small amount of "dandruff" still exists hence the 4-star rating vs. 5 stars. The best thing about the Amazon purchase is the price. One pint normally sells at stores for $20.00 and can seldom be found any more, probably due to the high price according to store clerks. The gallon through Amazon was around $35.00.
July 2012 update: (note: subsequent purchase prices quickly escalated to over $50.00) I ordered this product again only to receive instead Linatone Shed Relief Plus, which I returned as incorrect shipped product. This was the first recent attempt to buy the Linatone Plus Skin & Coat Revitalizer, the second attempt was from another vendor who also sent the Shed Relief Plus instead of the Skin & Coat Revitalizer. A check with the manufacturer's Customer Service revealed that the Skin & Coat Revitalizer is no longer available under that name, and has been "re-labeled" as the Shed Relief Plus product. The customer service rep stated it's the same product, but with a new label. I informed the rep that the ingredients are in different proportions, which she stated she was unaware of; she stated that she had been told that there was no change in the formulation. The Shed Relief has less protein, less zinc, less linolenic acidthese three ingredients contribute to improving skin and coat conditions, according to the label. The content of linoleic acid is measured differently between the two labelings, making a simple comparison impossiblebut if other soy-related ingredients have been reduced it's quite possible this one also has been reduced. The Shed Relief is also a noticeably thinner liquid than the Skin & Coat Revitalizer. Both vendors were unaware of the change in labeling and ingredients, continuing to show images of the "old" product even though they no longer have it in their inventories. I had previously rated the Skin & Coat Revitalizer at 4 stars but am now rating the "re-labeled" product at 2 stars because of the manufacturer's deceptive information practices and the reduction of ingredients. If over time the Shed Relief produces the same physical results as the Revitalizer the review wil be upgraded.
