This coupler leash suffers from a serious defect which could go easily unnoticed. First let me begin by describing the leash. It consists of three parts: the handle with a clasp on the end and two stretchable straps, each with a buckle on one end and a clasp on the other. The clasp on the handle secures both buckles, and the straps' clasps attach to your dogs' collars. The big flaw is that the clasp on the handle is considerable smaller than the clasps that attaches to your dogs' collars. Because the clasp on the handle is small (and not very sturdy), it can be very EASY for one of the buckles to push it open and be released unintentionally. This in fact happened to me.
I was walking with a friend and her two dogs. I was walking two Samoyeds on the coupler leash. They are well trained and typically walk behind me. They are well-under the 400 pounds combined weight for this leash. As I was walking I glanced back and saw only one Samoyed on the leash! For a moment my heart stopped as I initially didn't see my other Samoyed. He was sitting perfectly still on a corner about 10 yards from me. His leash detached from the handle without any pulling or tugging being involved. To be honest we were lucky nothing worse happened than a very brief scare. I would prefer to use a leash in which I am not dependant on luck for my dogs' well-being. Had this incident not happened, I probably would not have payed attention to this inherent defect in this leash. The clasp on the handle should at least have been equal in size (if not larger) than the clasps that attach to your dogs' collars. However, this is not the case. Because the buckles are attached to a small and not very strong clasp you run a high risk of having one or both leash straps pushing the clasp open and having your dog completely unattached.
Finally, I will conclude by saying I've used coupler leashes in the past. The ones I've used previously were constructed of some synthetic rope material that was woven into one piece. I think the handles deteriorated after considerable use. They didn't suffer from this defect. I have been using this coupler from Amazon which attaches to your leashes: Kakadu Pet Empire Dog Leash Coupler, 1" x 15-25", Midnight (Black). I highly recommend it over this product. I have used it for almost an entire year with no problems!
