We have a constant ant problem here in Florida, but these bowls have helped tremendously. First, the diameter of the upper food bowl exceeds that of the lower moat bowl so the amount of food dropped into the moat is very much reduced. Maybe your cats are neat eaters but ours delight in making as large a mess as possible. Second, the bowls are heavy very heavy so the risk of jostling them and sloshing water out of the moat is also greatly reduced. Third, they are ceramic rather than plastic, which retards bacteria growth. I didn't realize when I ordered them that the upper and lower bowls were connected, but it actually makes cleaning easier one piece rather than two. The only caution I would offer is that they are very heavy, which could pose a problem for the elderly or infirm. Other than that I couldn't be happier.
